SynchXray, L. C. uses X-ray diffraction to assist attorneys representing pharmaceutical companies and high-tech manufacturers involved in lawsuits claiming the infringement of a product.
X-ray diffraction can determine the unique fingerprint of the crystal structure within materials and compounds. This information is generally included within the claims of a patent and can be used to determining whether or not a new product has the same crystal structure as a patented material.
Most of the companies I work with have conventional x-ray diffraction capabilities in-house.
Conventional x-ray sources are found in virtually every materials, pharmaceutical and chemistry laboratory in the world. So, the obvious question becomes: why bother with the expense of using a synchrotron source like the Advanced Photon Source (used by SynchXray, LLC.)?
X-ray powder diffraction is a powerful tool for determining the crystalline and amorphous phases present in a material, but there are a wide variety of other analytical techniques using synchrotron radiation that provide valuable information for product development and patent litigation.
